Haggis Spam in the SPAMfighter Office?

Here at SPAMfighter, we love receiving gifts, schwag, and free crap, not only during yuletide, but anytime really.  So if you feel inclined, please fell free to send your smartphones, candy, or anything else to our office. It rarely happens, but then yesterday this little gem (below), aptly named "Cairnsmhor Fine Foods Haggis Flavored Handbaked Oatcakes", was sent to us.  Yes, you read it right. It seems to be a box containing Haggis flavored cookies. We're not sure what angel sent us the damn thing but we believe it to be a new and advanced physical materialization of spam which will surely cause headaches to the Internet Security business in 2012.

The Big July Celebrity Spam Study

Recently, we had the pleasure of studying 5.9 million spam mails sent in July 2011 in the effort to understand which celebrites were the most commonly used as bait by spammers. Using celebrities as bait in spam mails is of course not a new method. In fact, the much covered Anna Kournikova virus spread through spam celebrated a ten years anniversary earlier this year.

Unfortunately, this is a popular tactic for spammers as it seems to be working and the list (below) from our data suggests that spammers not only tend to focus on celebrities that are currently hot in the media but that there are a few usual suspects that are used more frequently. Typically, the celebrity spam mails contain links to malicious sites or sites selling viagra.  Claims of "unseen videos" of the celebrity are also very popular among spammers.  Here are the results of our findings...

Apps, the new Spamming Frontier

It seems that it's not just malware authors who like the look of Android apps for delivery of their wares. Spammers are getting in on the act too. Spammers are taking existing apps, cloning them, adding an advertising "module" and then republishing them to apps stores.

How do you guys at SPAMfighter handle all that spam?

One of the questions we get often is how we handle all the spam and make sure our anti spam network performs fast.  It is actually a very relevant question since we sort out millions of spam mails each day.  In order to sort the good ham from the bad spam we have a network of servers located around the globe. The idea behind SPAMfighter is that when you press the "Block" button to indicate an email as spam (and enough SPAMfighter users agree with your verdict) then the spam mail is quickly removed from the inbox of all SPAMfighter users.  If performance were slow or too many spam mails made it through to your inbox it wouldn't surprise us if you decided to uninstall SPAMfighter right away.

Osama's Mansion - See it On Google Earth scam

Crawling through our spam mails we came across something that definately is a scam.  This time they use Osama Bin Laden and his last living arrangement as bait. The now well-known mansion in Pakistan. First, the mail looks like this:

The links in the mail leads to a nice looking webpage. We wont reveal the domain here but it definately looks fishy. Now, going for the download a sign up page appears and, surprise, surprise, a payment page where you are asked for credit card. Please do not click through the links in these mails pushing Google Earth. Right now they use Osama but next time it will be something else. Google Earth is definately a freebie and the guys behind this scheme have tried this several times. In the mail here they refer to themselves as "Earth Enhancer" but other incarnations like "Earth Team VP" are also used. So hold on to your wallets and go for the free version of Google Earth.

Beware Osama Bin Laden Spam

With the recent news of Osama Bin Laden's death, it seems the spammers have got in early in sending out spam with this title, containing a shortened URL link to, amongst other things, viagra ads. The first spam ad we received was titled: "Osama Bin Laden is dead - Look the photo" (sic). There are also reports of SEO-driven traffic on searches about this topic that point to malware infected  sites. [Update] We're also receiving reports that the amount of Facebook spam being generated on this subject is probably even higher than inbox spam, so please be aware of those shortened links in your social media timelines as well.

Lottery scams - too good to be true

Lottery scams have been around for a long, long time. The nature of these scams are the basic "you have won $10 million US and we just need  a bit of information to do the bank transfer". At first sight it does look interesting and ideas like skipping your day-time job might pop up, but it is of cource very important that you do not reply to these scams, because winning the lottery might suddenly cost you thousands of dollars. Or the nice world cup tickets you won suddenly costs a transfer fee.
