Sega Hacked

After all of the repeated hacks on Sony, and particularly the high profile attack on the PlayStation Network, hackers appear to have turned their attention to Sega, who have now confirmed that they were not only attacked, but up to 1.3 million accounts have been compromised after one of their databases were breached. While the breach was obviously serious, in this instance, only emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were revealed, and spotted quickly by Sega, who isolated the breach and database information quickly, with users informed quickly. No payment / credit card information was revealed in the breach, as Sega uses a third-party provider to process payments, and so the data is not stored by the company. According to Help Net Security, LulzSec, who would usually take the blame these days in this type of exploit - even if it had nothing to do with the collective, have explicitly denied involvement in the hack, and have even offered to help Sega in "destroying" those responsible. The company has warned users to be careful of Phishing attacks that might use the compromised data, and to change their passwords.

Sony Hit by Another Attack

After we reported here and here, we thought that might, finally, be the end of the misery that Sony have been facing over the last month of security breaches. Alas not. The Next Web, reporting on a story published by Naked Security, has revealed that Sony Music Japan has been targeted by hackers. This time it is thought that no personal data or credit card details have been stolen, but again hackers have managed to use SQL-injection techniques to breach the site.

An Interview with Axel Gerken, DownloadMix

As part of our series of interviews with major players in the software download business we decided to hook up with Alex Gerken from DownloadMix. Having many years of experience, we wanted to hear Alex's opinion on the current state of the download industry. For those who aren't familiar, Downloadmix is a software download site where visitors typically find categorized software solutions that they can use for free or as a "trial" where users can try a program before deciding to make a purchase. We found Alex's concerns regarding "freeware" particularly interesting as SPAMfighter is widely known and supported by the users of our own freeware utility of the same name, but also products that are only offered as trials with limited functionality (a worthy topic for a future discussion). Continue reading for the interview:

The Black Market For Your Credit Card Details

In a chilling report, The Cyber-Crime Black Market: Uncovered [PDF] recently published, the black market for credit card and bank details is shown to be thriving, and almost as easy as cart shopping on amazon.com. The level of detail is shocking. You can buy with a "money back guarantee", bank and credit card information - with pricing ranging from $10 to $1500, depending on the credit both available and the strength of the credit history of the person who's details you are buying.

Making Software Better

Here at SPAMfighter, about three quarters of our development effort goes into keeping our products up-to-date, so they work better, faster and with more compatibility than ever before. Of course, it's a moving goalpost, and in this blog post I'd like to give some better insight into that, so you can see why you get updates and why, sometimes, it can take some time to get updates out. In an ideal world, we'd just write some great software, release it and that would be it. Alas, life is never that simple. Things change, new updates from Microsoft and others come out, and we either have to update to make things work when something changed, or else we need to write new plug-ins for new email clients, or make our antivirus faster and less intrusive on system performance.
