Looking for a Forefront replacement?

ms exchange server and a forefront replacementtThe word on the street is that some Microsoft users are in the market for a Forefront replacement. Microsoft is not making it a secret: they are transitioning themselves from a maker of traditionally packaged software to cloud-based solutions. During the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference this past July and again at TechEd, Microsoft outlined their new cloud-based strategy and focus. While it created quite a stir in their reseller channel, this change was generally well received. It will be very interesting to see whether it will be a smart move. One thing is for sure: It is definately going to impact a lot of resellers and customers out there. This new major shift to cloud-based devices and services could very well be the reason some of the Forefront products was discontinued late last year.

In December 2012 Microsoft announced they would stop shipping some Forefront Enterprise security products. Current users would of course to be supported for some time though. Products like Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for Exchange Server Service Pack 1, Forefront Security for Exchange Server Service Pack 2 will be supported until December 2015.

We speculate the possibility of a connection to the new cloud strategy as far back as 2012. Current customers in the market for replacements for Forefront and other solutions are likely to find them soon to be discontinued.

So let’s ask the question again: Are you also looking for a Forefront replacement?

    Hi

According to the latest VBspam report spamfighter only catches 98,7% of spam mail. Is that number also representative for the spamfighter ecxhange product?

  2. Kim Falkner says:

    Hi James,

The catch rate from that report can also be applied for SPAMfighter Exchange Module. They use the same anti spam engine although SPAMfighter Exchange Module also has other weapons in it’s armour.

I am glad you ask me that question because there is so much more than only spam catch rate if you are planning a replacement for MS Forefront or just browsing for an Exchange spam filter. You should also take these factors into consideration:

    – False positives (real mails wrongly labeled as spam)
    – TCO (Total cost of ownership)
    – Ease of implementation
    – Features (SPAMfighter Exchange Module also offers eg. disclaimers in outgoing mails and a nice tool for Exchange Diagnostics and Exchange Security)
    – Price model and pricing
    – Access to support.
    – Access to upgrades
