The word on the street is that some Microsoft users are in the market for a Forefront replacement. Microsoft is not making it a secret: they are transitioning themselves from a maker of traditionally packaged software to cloud-based solutions. During the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference this past July and again at TechEd, Microsoft outlined their new cloud-based strategy and focus. While it created quite a stir in their reseller channel, this change was generally well received. It will be very interesting to see whether it will be a smart move. One thing is for sure: It is definately going to impact a lot of resellers and customers out there. This new major shift to cloud-based devices and services could very well be the reason some of the Forefront products was discontinued late last year.
In December 2012 Microsoft announced they would stop shipping some Forefront Enterprise security products. Current users would of course to be supported for some time though. Products like Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for Exchange Server Service Pack 1, Forefront Security for Exchange Server Service Pack 2 will be supported until December 2015.
We speculate the possibility of a connection to the new cloud strategy as far back as 2012. Current customers in the market for replacements for Forefront and other solutions are likely to find them soon to be discontinued.
