Last December, Microsoft announced they would be discontinuing bundled sales of Forefront Enterprise security products. Existing customers will continue to be supported, but they will not be renewing subscriptions for Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, the Microsoft Exchange add-on for detecting spam and viruses utilizing various filters.
It is apparently not the whole Forefront branded security family being axed and they do offer other server security solutions but some companies who probably would have invested in Forefront are right now looking for an alternative if they were to invest in server spam and virus filtering.

For existing customers there is probably no need to rush out for looking for a Forefront alternative due to the continued support. However, a viable alternative available is the SPAMfighter Exchange Module (SEM).
Obviously some companies might have invested in hardware for using Forefront and would like an alternative anti-spam and anti-virus solution integrated in MS Exchange Server. That’s where SPAMfighter Exchange Module (SEM) comes in and where the shameless self-promotion starts. SEM is an easy to configure, but highly configurable spam filter for Exchange Server. Spamfiltering for Exchange Server 2013 is of course also supported. SEM offers a series of compelling features:
* Installation and configuration within minutes
* VB Spam certified anti-spam engine
* Powerful and flexible custom policies for spam filtering
* Free 30 day trial
* Product sold in bundles of (5) licenses, ideal for small businesses
Here are a few words from one of our customers having to find an alternative for Microsoft Forefront:
SPAMFighter has, so far, worked as expected. I have not been on a production Exchange 2013 deployment for too long, but in that time period I have used both the internal SPAM filters as well as Microsoft’s own Exchange Online Protection. Neither of which were any good at all. Their rules for blocking what is and what is no SPAM was terrible, let most things through, most concerning was .exe files wrapped in .zip files!
“Needless to say I’ve been looking for a server side alternative similar to ForeFront which I used back in Exchange 2007 / 2010 days and it worked wonderful. SPAMFighter appears to be that solution (at least for now). Upon the extinction of our 30 day trial, I fully expect to be purchasing at least a 40 user license to keep this thing running permanently.
Feel free to quote me / testimonial on your website “SPAMFighter works better than first party Microsoft products that are currently available. I will be trusting the security of my Exchange 2013 to the folks at SPAMFighter from now on!” – Jason Maeser, SBI Technologies Corp“
